Jake Smith (RHP), c/o ’08, of the Augusta GA CSRA Crusaders, played at Darton State College, GA and Campbell University, NC. He was drafted in 2011 by the San Francisco Giants in the 48th round, – after serving as the groundskeeper for the Giants’ A affiliate Augusta Green Jackets, where he attended a tryout. Jake advanced in their minors system up to AA, but was released this summer.

Jake was probably wondering if his baseball career was coming to an end, short of his ultimate goal of making it to the majors. Providentially, the San Diego Padres weren’t about to let an arm of his talent clear waivers; they claimed him in July for pitching depth on their AA affiliate San Antonio Missions.

It seems the Padres had a need for pitching depth at more than their AA club, because yesterday San Diego called Jake up to the major league ball club. He made his major league debut that very night, pitching the 8th inning.

Congratulations Jake! – and best of luck. All of HWSA nation is cheering for you!
